Adventure
When I was younger I remember being surprised that the guy who wrote the “Pina Colada Song” would go on to pen the book and music for The Mystery of Edwin Drood”.
Listening to Adventure, an album that is as inoffensive as it is treacly, I can ONLY hear these songs as early 80s tunes for a Broadway Musical.
Was Holmes following a pattern set by Lloyd Webber for Great White Way style or was he a vanguard? I don’t know. But I hear a line between him and Jonathan Larson. And that’s fine.
Harmless. And inoffensive, as I said. Musically, that is. His lyrics are often poignant and insightful. I understand his success now.
