The 1981 Listening Post - The Pirates - A Fistful of Dubloons

Reviewed by Tom Mott / LISTENING POST DISCOVERY

Released: June 1981 The Pirates A Fistful Of Dubloons Genre: Garage-Drenched Reverb Rating: 4.7 out of 5 Highlights: Honey Hush Put Your Cat Clothes On Sweet Love On My Mind Milk Cow Blues Casting My Spell That time Link Wray, Wilco Johnson, and the Hammersmith Gorillas all snorted airplane glue and walked on water. This is a fat slab of R&B/R&R tracks from the go-go inducing hooligans who brought us Shakin' All Over back in 1962 (and were covered by The Who, Motorhead, and The Guess Who, among others). Milk Cow Blues cranked up to 20 approximates just how much Elvis in '56 must have seemed like an alien invasion. Rock'n'Roll don't get better than this.
