Released: October 1 1980 The Hollies “Buddy Holly” Genre: Nostalgia Rating: 2 out of 5 I’m not sure how to evaluate this. At times it’s New Wave, mostly Soft Rock, but it’s mostly Buddy Holly songs, except when it’s not. As performed by a group that named themselves after Buddy. This is the sort of thing that shows up every once in a while like when Billie Joe Armstrong and Norah Jones teamed up to record Everly Brothers songs. I mean, it’s nice. But are you going to shell out $20 for cover versions when the original, perfect tracks are out there, always available? I mean, their schmaltzy version of “Heratbeat” makes me want to abandon listening to music for the duration of my afternoon. If this is meant as an ode to the master it is completely unnecessary. If it was meant as anything else, it is also completely unnecessary. The tear on the glasses mean more about the abuse of these tunes than the death of Buddy. Stick with the originals instead of these Yacht Rock versions.
