The 1980 Listening Post - Eddie Criss Group - Undertaker

1980 Housekeeping

Eddie Criss Group

Undertaker

Genre: DIY New Wave Punk

2.5 out of 5

At times the repetitiveness on some of the songs (“Ready Ready Now” and “Deceiver” being perfect examples), with Criss’s almost bored vocals, remind me of Wipers. Not nearly as full or as interesting with a tinny razor blade guitar instead of the wall of axes Greg Sage employs to aurally assault the listener. But the style is there, on the other side of the country.

With Wayne Kramer handling guitars here the line can be made from early port-garage into the 80s. In other words, Sage wasn’t really doing anything new, he just employed new studio techniques and tricks, which Criss didn’t have at his disposal or ability.

Also, the songs aren’t really all that great. And Kramer just seems to be doing whatever he wants in the background most of the time.

Not a lot of info on Eric Criss Group but here’s the article the LP staff unearthed: https://rockandrollglobe.com/punk/whatever-happened-to-the-eddie-criss-group/
