The 1980 Listening Post - The Charlie Daniels Band - Full Moon

 July 18 1980

The Charlie Daniels Band

Full Moon

Genre: Southern…Rock?

3.5 out of 5

Highlights:

The Legend of Wooley Swamp

Lonesome Boy From Dixie

There’s a fine line between “Southern Rock” and “Country” and bands like Charlie Daniels and Molly Hatchett and Eddie Rabbitt and the like straddle that edge. Primarily because that music was becoming popular in the 80s, the guitars were crunchy and, well, when I started this project I was really focusing on high(er) profile releases.

It’s my intent to be more discerning and pull some of the more blatantly non-rock albums off the list as we move forward.

But, I am listening to the CDB record.

The lead track, which is also the single, “The Legend of Wooley Swamp” follows the “Devil Went Down to Georgie” formula: It’s a narrative structure, albeit this time in first person. It feels like Devil. But there’s no obvious fiddle solo, so, it stands side by side instead of in comparison. And barn burners like “Lonesome Boy From Dixie” and   totally work to satisfy that Country Rock itch.

The business of music is interesting. You have a band that sells a few units. Then they have a massive hit. You hope they will recreate that success but, really, you need to get them on the road to sell tickets and t-shirts. The audience goes, wanting that one massive song. But! If you never release new music from them, they become a nostalgia act. Even though most people aren’t interested in anything new from them.

The records are the art of diminishing returns but the machine has to keep grinding.

That’s this record.
