I’ve never heard an album that sounds more like the gentle indie pop of the early 2000s than this one. It’s pretty decidedly gentle and yet it rocks. It’s foot is deeply set in the roots of rock but it’s that gentility and nearly retro sound that is gonna shape the music of the future.
“Music Goes Round and Around” echoes Louis Prima in a way that predicts the swing revival that’s 20 years away (and at the beginnings of the Indie sound) without ever demanding that you put on your wing tips and practice that pretzel (which I could never ever ever figure out. But thanks to the Junior dancer who tried to teach me and taught me the most delicious dip that no one else does. Thanks, buddy! I’m a hit at every wedding.). And “Roll Call” is the Randy Newman song he forgot to write.
A grandly unassuming record by seasoned professionals who never sound out of step with the times because they’re just so damned pure about what they do.
Solid.
