Wilko Johnson - Ice on the Motorway

Wilko Johnson

Ice on the Motorway

Genre: Pub Rock

3.5 out of 5

Highlights:

Bottle Up and Go

Requisite 80s cover: “The Whammy”, “Can I Please Crawl Out Your Window”, “Leave My Woman Alone” it’s that kind of album.

The only thing missing from much of this record is the sounds of clinking pint glasses and the din of the crowd followed by smatterings of applause after each song by the 30% that are actually paying attention. The smattering appears in what seems to be the live track, “The Whammy” which is Wilko doing a pretty good live channelling of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins.

It’s great stuff, to be sure, but I have no doubt that at least 27 people lost a tooth or two in a bar fight that broke out during a Walk Johnson set.

You know Wilko introduces the band during the last part of “When I’m Gone”. The song is made for that.
