Requisite 80s cover: The Hollies’ “Pay It Back with Interest”. Just how influential were The Hollies? They certainly got one helluva payday from being ripped off by Radiohead who, arguably, would not have the career they do without the launching pad of “Creep”. This is a perfectly fine cover that doesn’t do much. It just shouts, “Let’s try to get a hit off someone else’s stuff!” And why not? Isn’t that how The Brill Building worked?
Ah, the hangover of the 70s.
I gotta say, there’s something to the special sauce that pervades Canadian Rock. Maybe I’m biased. It’s my favorite country, after all.
These are perfectly fine unctuous MOR songs, the kinds you expect to hear on an FM station that is afraid to be cutting edge but wants to sound like it has an edge.
I think Gary writes lovely songs that other people should buy.
He really gives Eric Carmen a run for his money on “The Way You Look Tonight”. It nearly bites on “Go All the Way” but just a touch. And the Foreigner runs through this thing pretty strong.
