Straight out of the dive-dance shimmy girl group pop of the 60s, but, instead of a talking non-singer, we get Freddy Mutant, with his brit-snarl + vibrato lounge singer quality as counterpoint to the dreamy vox of Connie, Mia and Sue. Although he doesn’t go full talk on “True Story” and that makes me miss Schneider all the more.
But, damn the songs aren’t great. What made B-52s so awesome wasn’t just their ironic in-your-face traditional rock styles but, they wrote hooks galore out of the weirdest stuff. The Mutants don’t have those.
“You Wait” is the most egregious of the B-52 bites. And it’s not a good song.
