The 1980 Listening Post - Robert Johnson - The Memphis Demos

Robert Johnson - The Memphis Demos

#172
1980 Housekeeping LISTENING POST DISCOVERY
Robert Johnson
The Memphis Demos
Genre: New Wave Power Pop Guitar Slinger Glory
4.5 out of 5

Highlights:
I’ll Be Waiting
Wish Upon a Star
Shaking it Down

Requisite 80s cover: A lacerating version of “Burning Love” that takes the original and makes me want to pick up the guitar and learn how to play like this. Also Orbison’s “Claudette”, which I could not recognize.

The only worse name for a musician in the age of search engines than X is Robert Johnson. In the former’s case, you just can’t easily search them…at least at the dawn of search days, but for the latter, come on, man. You KNOW you are just gonna get compared to the blues master. Right?
Except…this is an explosion of new wave guitar slinging mastery that at once inspires and also sounds like a swarm of bees riding razor blades.
Here’s the thing: I bet you he could have jammed with the master and they would have traded 4’s and 8’s and put on a blistering show.
But where did Johnson go? I know he was Entwhistle’s guitarist for a while but, there’s little info on him after this album.
Man, I wish this streamed. This is some terrific stuff.
