The 1980 Listening Post - White Spirit - White Spirit

 White Spirit - White Spirit

#348

September 19 1980
White Spirit
White Spirit
Genre: Metal
3.75 out of 5

Highlights:
Midnight Chaser

This is a one off by a band who’s guitarist would go off to join Iron Maiden. But, wow. What an amazing thing this is.
That opener sounds like it could have fallen off the best Thin Lizzy or Deep Purple records.
A record so steeped in early 70s motifs that it almost sounds anachronistic. But it’s also immediate and dynamic. In a way it harkens to the future of bands like Vancouver’s Black Mountain more than the shredasms that Metal will turn in to. The ambition is ahead of production ability and that’s so evident on the epic final track “Fool For Gods”.
This is very much the last gasp of its ilk. Everything about this genre is about to split into two factions: Thrash and “Witch/Wytch” Death Metal. In that regard this sounds anachronistic and I don’t think they had much of a future.
