Allen’s Rating: 2.5 out of 5
Sheffield’s Rating: 4 out of 5

Highlights:
Mister Softee
Darrio

August Darnell’s music just makes me happy. It evokes parties and dancing and eyeing the girls (or guys, as the case may be!), and Zoot Suits and funky times and swingy big bands. Mostly it’s just super catchy tunes, like the silky, breezy Mister Softee or, the lazy, hazy Off the Coast of Me, or the simple joy of Darrio. Darnell is all entertainment, self effacement (I mean, Mister Softee!?! HA!) and musically eclectic surprises. This leans pretty heavily into the disco (the overuse of the “hand clap” gets tiresome), so that might turn some off. But at least give Mister Softee a spin. Super catchy. A pretty solid debut album from the Kid.
