The 1980 Listening Post - The Diodes - Action/Re-Action

 The Diodes - Action/Re-Action

#390

October 1980
The Diodes
Action/Re-Action
Genre: Canadian Adam Ant (Not & the Ants, though)
4.25 out of 5

Highlights:
City of the Dead
Rocket Over and Under
Edge of Darkness

One of the most fun discoveries in the download era was The Diodes’ “Tired of Waking up Tired”. A band that MUST have influenced the likes of The Futureheads 25 years later.
Maybe it’s my affinity for all things Canadian or my affection for the country and it’s denizens but I really liked this album.
While most New Wave or Power Pop teeters closer to one or the other in this era, The Diodes’ seem to be embracing the both equally. The crunch and heavy guitars reminds me more of The Brains than anything else, and it surely doesn’t sound as light and poppy as the aforementioned single.
A track like “Rocket Over and Under” could have fallen off Adam Ant’s Vive Le Rock…if it didn’t come out 5 years before!  Did Tony Visconti and Stuart Goddard have this record? Seriously, “Everything I Am” could BE mid-80s Adam Ant, right?
