Blondie soundalikes The Nuns surprised me here. They open their record with the tribal “Savage” answering the question of “Were Adam and the Ants and Bow Wow Wow the only practitioners of the Burundi rhythm appropriation?
The answer is, you can guess, no.
But then the album gets really crunchy. Which is when Alejandro Escovedo (!!!) gets his turn at bat. In fact, even though I think Jennifer Miro’s voice is perfect for this sound, it’s Escovedo’s songs that pop, until, that is, “Wild”, which, had they had better management, should have been a hit.
Every song on this very short album was a surprise to me. It ended with me wanting (a lot) more.
Sadly, Miro spent her last few years as a receptionist in a law firm in NY before succumbing to cancer at 54.
