The Time: Tuesday, July 15, 1980. 11:55 PM
The Place: London, The Blitz Club
Eurodisco blares loudly as impeccably made up and costumed New Romantic kids go through their well rehearsed dance poses. Dancers: (in robotic unison) Turn to the left, turn to the right. We are the goon squad and we’re coming to town. Beep beep. At the bar, Steve Strange stares intensely at Boy George, who leans meaningfully against the arm of Siouxsie Sioux, who hasn’t noticed, being immersed in shouted conversation with a perfectly androgynous Blitz Kid wearing a frilly 19th century doublet and breeches with silver tights and ballet slippers.
Siouxsie Sioux: (gesturing at the crowd) Same old thing in brand new drag!
Steve Strange: What?
Siouxsie Sioux: It’s all… it’s all used up!
Blitz Kid: It’s a whiz kid world.
Boy George: A real life adventure, worth more than pieces of gold!
Enter David Bowie as God. Music suddenly stops. All eyes gaze heavenward as Bowie, clad in all white, carrying what appear to be priestly garments, descends a transparent plastic staircase. Bowie takes his time, grinning madly, but looking straight ahead. He finally reaches the dance floor, where all have bowed before him.
Bowie (pointing): I’m making a video. I need… You.... You… and you. Oh, and you.
Girl Boy in Pink with Huge Hair: (squealing ecstatically) Me!?
Bowie: (chuckling) Nah, silly, the one behind you.
Nodding, the four acolytes stand and follow Bowie back up the staircase. The Blitz Kids slowly rise, trancelike, as they pass. Just before reaching the top, Bowie stops and turns.
Bowie: A million dreams, a million scars. Because you’re young…
(The crowd surges forward)
Bowie: Stop! (He waves his arms majestically) Let there be guitars! (The crowd gasps)
Robert Fripp enters, dressed in distressingly normal clothing, and hands the DJ a record. From the speakers, Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) begins to play.
Bowie: Now… dance!
(Everyone obeys. Fripp exits smiling.) Bowie turns and ascends the staircase, followed by the Four Acolytes, into a bank of clouds, and they all disappear. Boy George: I think the eighties just started. Steve Strange: Bastard. He better put me in that video.
Blitz Kid: Ashes to ashes, funk to funky.
Siouxsie Sioux: What the f**k’s a “video?”
Music swells and we fade to black. FIN
