The 1980 Listening Post - Inmates - Shot in the Dark

The Inmates - Shot in the Dark

#355

September 1980

The Inmates

Shot in the Dark

Genre: Psycho Garage

3.5 out of 5

Requisite 80s covers:

“So Much in Love” an early Jagger/Richards joint written for The Mighty Avengers. Sounds like the Stones

“Why When Love is Gone” by The Isley Brothers

“Some Kind of Wonderful” by John Ellison

I don’t know if the Inmates were there first or what but this is the first time we’ve really heard this kind of music, no? It hews closer to what Mojo and the Reverend would be doing down the line. It’s not as obsessed with monster culture like The Cramps. No, this is pub rock with a slightly crazed edge.

In a way it shows me the bridge between the Stones and Psychobilly. So, there’s that.

I don’t have much to add. Much like The Stones, there’s a ton of covers on this thing and, by 1980, we really have moved past that, haven’t we?

No?

Ok. It’s fine. Gimme a beer.

The album isn’t available but you can cobble together 9 of the tracks from their Best Of…which is how I listened to it.
