When these records showed up at the end, just barely making it in time for the initial posting (without having to go back in time to pick up stragglers) I have to admit, I thought it was Kevin Ayers.
I hate Kevin Ayers. Well, hate is a strong word. He just has never given me a reason to think, “I can’t wait to get to THAT record!”
But Kevin Coyne is not Kevin Ayers.
He put out 2 records in 1980 and one of them was a double, so basically, 3. And I’ve never heard of the guy.
He’s obviously got issues. And his choice of therapy is to make gobs of music. This one sounds nothing like Sanity Stomp. It has more in common with Dylan. It’s Dylan meets Syl Barrett. While future channeling Neutral Milk Hotel.
It’s more experimental than I expected considering the straight aheadedness of Sanity. “Mad Boy No. 2” is as bizarre as anything the more experimental groups of the era were doing, but it’s also accessible and a bit of a bloodletting.
And what can be said about “The Old Fashioned Love Song”? It’s a traditional 1-4-5 mid-tempo rocker that has as much passion as a Little Richard wail coupled with desperation and insanity.
Striking.
