The 1981 Listening Post - Nico - Drama of Exile

 Nico - Drama of Exile

#249

June 1981

Nico

Drama of Exile

Genre: Germanic Post-Rock Expressionism Rock

2.25 out of 5

Requisite 80s Covers:

“Waiting for the Man” which is not made better by Nico’s vocals. And, since I was never a fan of this album to begin with….

David Bowie’s “Heroes”. Only one person should ever do this song. The guy who wrote it. I don’t care how much you love it, it’s a signature tune. An d since she doesn’t bring anything new to it, ala Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s version of “Born to Run”, it’s best left alone.

Are we still, in 1981, considering Nico a valid talent that we think she will move units or has anything of interest to put out to the public? I mean, when Yoko Ono has bested you perhaps it’s time to call it a day.

Thing is, this album is really good…when Nico isn’t doing anything. It’s very Scary Monsters David Bowie, musically, but Nico ruins everything with her Germanic non-singing and insipidly high school poetry lyrics.

What I never thought of before this record is how much Amanda Palmer seems to have patterned her singing after Nico’s. But I like Amanda’s music (well, some of it) and I find her lyrics clever. Nico is just…not.
