Apart from the Crowd
Genre: The Greatest Album You’ve Never Heard
5 out of 5 (It probably is a 4.5-4.75 but there’s not a single bad track on it and quite a few amazing ones)
Highlights:
Hold On to Something
…And the Light Goes On
Dream That Never Dies
Maybe It’s You
Another Day if My Life
Danny Wilde. You know him. He went on from this to create The Rembrandts and co-wrote the most successful TV theme in history, “I’ll Be There for You”, from Friends.
And if you thought that song was catchy, you probably found yourself in possession of at least the single by The Rembrandts if not a Rembrandts album.
But, did you go all the way back to 1981 to hear this album?
I did not.
I only heard of Great Buildings this year.
What a hole has been there in my life.
This is the sound of the 90s Power Pop on vinyl a full decade+ before it would be a thing.
In fact, I would say that this album could be on any playlist with the other great Power Pop masterpiece of the year, Working Class Dog.
Great Buildings sound more like a collective. Like a project by a bunch of musicians. A collective working together, whereas Rick’s record sounded more like everyone was in service to him and his star.
This band is tight. Just when I think, maybe I should get another cup of coffee, “Maybe Its You” comes on and, nope, that’s enough of an adrenalin rush to keep me going.
Guarantee a large swath of the LA Power Pop bands of the 00s either had this record or heard this record or passed burned CDs of this record to each other.
This record is like discovering a terrific Nick Lowe record (especially “Heartbreak”) that was actually well produced, cuts like a knife and is from this side of the pond.
