The 1981 Listening Post - Yankee Rose - Yankee Rose

Yankee Rose - Yankee Rose

#302

1980 Housekeeping
Yankee Rose
Yankee Rose
Genre: Power Pop
4.25 out of 5

Highlights:
Any Time of the Day
I’m Gonna Lose
Little Chance

Over the years there have been numerous discussions of what the definition of “Power Pop” is. Melodic rock is one simplification but another is, you know it when you hear it. The vocals have a certain pining, almost emo quality. In fact, I would argue that “Emo” is really Power Pop with more crunch and snot. Because the granddaddies of the movement are Raspberries (among others) and sometimes Eric Carmen and the boys are so genteel as to border on belonging on the same bill as The Lettermen.
Then there’s the Rick Springfields and Doug Fiegers of the world. There’s more edge. More snark. While they still pine for the girl, they aren’t good guys. Rick wants your girlfriend and Doug is waiting for your parents to leave the house to get you to sit on his….(“It hurts!”)
Yankee Rose sits right in the middle of all that. This is what happens if Raspberries finally “go all the way” and yet are still heartbroken.

We’ve only got 6 of the tracks from this and the band doesn’t stream on Apple Music or Spotify. Which, as I’m sure you’ve heard me say, is a damned shame.
