No More Dirty Deals

Genre: How many fucking Van Zants are there?

3.5 out of 5

Highlights:

Put My Trust in You

Only the Strong Survive

Requisite 80s cover: "634-5789” - Wilson Pickett. It did not need the Southern Rock treatment. There’s a reason we’ve never heard this version. It’s completely unnecessary.

I’m sure this band blew the doors off some fantastic 4th of July barbecues and beer busts. But it’s not very interesting. Why? Because, as is often the case with these bands, the noodling is more important than the song craft.

I would submit that Brad Paisley is as good a guitarist as Johnny but he and his partners write better songs where the playing is in service of the message of the song.

Same can be said for Randy Rhodes and Ozzy, which is this era. The playing is amazing. The songs are better. Both are in service of each other.
