Released: 1980 The Meteors (NLD) Hunger Genre: New Wave Rating: 3 out of 5 Highlights: Charms or Chains I Suck Cubist Boy Thirty six minutes of exceedingly competent new wave music from Gröningen band The Meteors. They apparently found a lot of local success, packing houses and the like. And they show a certain quality here, sounding great with the help of producer Conny Plank. The only problem is the songs aren’t memorable. The highlights are mostly a cut above serviceable. What is there is heavily influenced by Bowie, especially of the new wave-era. (They reputedly chose Plank for his associations with Bowie, Eno, etc.) The one exception is the ridiculously perky “Candy”, which sounds like the silliest and slickest of the eras synth-coated hits. But whether following their muse or mainstream success, they fail to write a good tune. I do enjoy some of the faster, punkier moments, such as album opener “Charms or Chains” or album closer “Cubist Boy,” the latter of which sounds especially like classic Bowie. Better yet is the brooding thump of “It Sucks”, which is to my ear the most distinctive of the album’s songs.
