The 1981 Listening Post - The Bop Cats - The Bop Cats

 Reviewed by Geo Rule

Released: 1981 The Bop Cats The Bop Cats Genre: Rockabilly Rating: 2.5 out of 5 Highlights: Please Gimme Somethin' Hey, I love me some good Rockabilly. Sadly. . . this ain’t it. To be snarky, I thought about calling it “An entire album of Stray Cats ‘B’ sides with a dash of early Johnny Cash”, but then I just couldn’t be that mean to the Cats or The Man in Black. Really, I oughta be at least tolerably cool with this album, and yet I just can’t get there. The Rockabilly furniture is here. The guitar. The ‘tude. The energy. . . umm. . . Rockabilly is all about the energy, right? This is laugh track kind of energy, for the most part. Somebody cared enough to fake it, but still recognizably fake. Finally, at track 11, I hit something I might actually hum an hour from now. “Please Gimme Somethin’ “ definitely does not suck. Still a B side for the Cats, however. One of the most famous mean editorial reviews of a submission is “This is both good and original. Unfortunately, the parts that are good are not original, and the parts that are original are not good.” Yeah, that’s this album.
