The 1981 Listening Post - Sean Tyla - Redneck in Babylon

 Reviewed by Tom Mott

Released: 1981 Sean Tyla Redneck In Babylon Genre: Bar Band Rating: 3 out of 5 Highlights: Daddy Put The Bomp There are two strands of pub rock. The basically punk sounds of Dr Feelgood, Eddie and the Hot Rods, The Pirates, and The Hammersmith Gorillas. And the mid-tempo bar band sound of Nick Lowe, Ducks Deluxe, early Dire Straights. Tyla was in Ducks Deluxe, so this falls in the second strand. It's all very Beaver Brown, Springsteen-ish, Clover, Tom Petty b-sides, maybe some Atlantic Rhythm Section playing on the jukebox down at Dino's Bar and Grill. The band is tight, and Tyla's got a strong, gravelly "late Roger Daltrey" voice. Lyrics of the "up at the crack of dawn ... watchin' the clock go tick and a tock ... out on the street ... pour another round ..." variety. [1] If you're devastated by the mysterious disappearance of Eddie Wilson. ********** 1. I asked ChatGPT to generate snippets of fake lyrics for a bar band: "We were born to run, chasing dreams in the midnight sun ..." "We've got our guitars and our hearts on fire..." "We're just a bunch of dreamers, but tonight we're kings and queens ..." "She's got legs that go on for days ..." "In the heart of the city, where the neon lights shine bright ..."
