#21/1178
January 1986
Alvin Lee
Detroit Diesel
Genre: Blues Rock
2.5 out of 5
I really feel like ZZ Top is a commercial disco rock machine masquerading as a blues boogie band. They tapped into that easy groove and mechanized everything the Stones set out to get people gyrating to.
Lee wants to take us back. He wants a good four on the floor when he needs it but he cares more about the 1-4-5 than he does the drone. When he’s on target it’s delicious. Sometimes he indulges his proficiency impulses more than I would prefer but, for the most part, there’s worse things than spending 20 minutes with Alvin.
Oh…the record’s 40 minutes?
Yeah. I stand by my original statement.
