How much of a genius is Matt Johnson?
I mean, we all know The The and how fantastic that stuff was. And also that he totally eschewed some punk/New Wave nickname and just went by the droll Matt Johnson.
He also, with little to no fanfare, was in this project pre-The The which is more experimentation than anything else really, what’s the word…listenable.
I’m including it because of the Johnson connection. It’s also like what if Ray Davies fronted The Residents? (“U.F.O. Report no.1”)
Songs like “Singing in the Rain” are just sounds of Rain with someone humming an interpolation of the aforementioned song. It’s not recognizable. But I get the joke. It’s a joke. This is the kind of stuff I would make in film class.
I would have been in awe of Matt if we were college mates.
